NAUSEA WITH PREGNANCY
There are many reasons for women feeling nausea in the early stages of pregnancy or even throughout the entire nine months. The hormones are shifting quickly because the body suddenly finds itself pregnant. Low blood-sugar levels and the body’s need for more nutrition are areas to address in helping remedy this situation.
The following herbs support the liver and hormonal system. Consult with a midwife or doctor about good quality prenatal vitamins.
Wild yam root—2 parts
Meadowsweet—1 part
Dandelion root—1 part
Peach leaves—1 part
Fennel seed—1 part
Dose and Use: Easiest to take in tincture form, 25–40 drops, three to four times day. During acute times, take 10 drops as often as needed. Eat easily digested foods that appeal to you—some ideas include yogurt, miso vegetable soups, barley and slippery elm bark gruels with a touch of ginger, tamari, or miso, crackers, and kuzu gravies added to cooked brown rice.
Drink 3–4 cups of Yoni tea, warm or cool, each day. Add a touch of herb honey; sacred basil is my favorite. Other safe and nourishing herbs to combine in different ways with raspberry could include lemon balm, oatstraw, linden blossoms, and sweet marjoram. Warm ginger root tea can also be helpful in easing nausea.
EXHAUSTION
Some women feel exhausted in the early months of pregnancy. Remember you are now eating for two beings. Do your best to eat nourishing foods and rest. Dandelion root and leaves, yellow dock root and leaves, and nettle leaves can be taken as a tea or tincture two to three times a day if you feel tired and run down. They increase iron and help your body better assimilate nutrients. Flo-radix, a commercially prepared herbal liquid, is also an excellent remedy for low iron. Yellow dock syrup with black-strap molasses is a good remedy too (listed in chapter 5). Refer to foods listed under iron in chapter 6.
SONOGRAM AND AMNIOCENTESIS SUPPORT
Be well informed and clear about why you are doing either of these two procedures. Take Rescue Remedy as often as you need before and after to help ease any anxiety or fear you may feel. Have your partner or a good friend along for emotional support. Talk to your baby before, during, and after the procedure to let her or him know what is going on and why. Medical procedures such as sonograms and amniocentesis disrupt the flow of energy in the body. You may want to have some body work after the procedure like polarity, reiki, or Shiatsu to help rebalance your body’s energy flow. Flower essences can also help rebalance the body’s energy.
LABOR SUPPORT
The following herbal suggestions come from my own experiences of being a support person at several births, some at home and some in hospitals.
Flower Teas
Birth can be a very special, powerful, and magical time for the woman giving birth and for her helpers. Wherever you choose to give birth, surround yourself ahead
